Pacer Corporation- Plant Operator (Custer, SD)

Job purpose                 


The Plant Operator is responsible for the safe, productive and efficient operation of the mill equipment.  This position involves a variety of physically demanding tasks which requires you to be physically fit and hardworking. Conditions and operations change frequently so adaptability is very important.  An ability to recognize and properly communicate new or potential problems is a must.  This position requires attention to detail, good teamwork skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, good organizational skills, effective time management, and physical stamina.


Duties and responsibilities
  • Conduct workplace exams, reporting and or correcting all hazardous conditions
  • Collect and analyze samples for in process quality control
  • Ensure that all mills are running at their optimum production rate
  • Adjust separators as required for quality control or operating efficiency
  • Monitor and maintain a consistent mill charge
  • Monitor and asses the operating condition of the equipment and report or correct any current or pending problems
  • Ensure that critical equipment such as trunnion bearings, ring gears, separators, jackshaft bearings, gear reducers, etc. are properly lubricated at correct intervals
  • Ensure that all other bearings, reducers, etc. are checked and lubricated appropriately
  • Ensure that the mill and surrounding area is kept clean and orderly
  • Conduct and record inventory reviews of operating supplies such as drive belts, lubricants, grinding media, etc.
  • Accurately measure and record silo levels
  • Accurately document pertinent information on production reports
  • Assist co-workers with their assigned duties whenever possible
  • Any other duties assigned


  • MSHA Safety training, monthly reviews, annual refresher
  • ISO training
  • Biannual first aid and CPR certification
  • On the job task training
  • Must be 18 or older
  • Must be able to pass a drug test
  • Must be able to read, write, and perform basic math
  • Must be physically sound


Working conditions
  • Subject to weather both hot and cold
  • Three stories of stairs, catwalks, and ladders with multiple low clearance areas
  • Uneven terrain
  • Loud equipment
  • Dusty conditions
  • Frequent exposure to grease, oil, and mud


Physical requirements
  • Must have the physical stamina to traverse three flights of stairs/ladders for the duration of a 12 hour shift
  • Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Must be able to move wheelbarrows weighing up to 600 pounds over rough terrain
  • Must be able to sweep and shovel unconsolidated ore for extended periods
  • Must be able to work in awkward positions for extended periods
  • Must be able to perform all of the aforementioned in inclement weather conditions


Direct reports


The plant operator reports directly to the plant manager at all times and frequently to the maintenance
