Oddball Interview Question for the Week

Oddball questions may seem to have nothing to do with an open job position, but companies are increasingly asking these types of brainteaser questions to determine a candidate’s ability to think on their feet, think critically, problem solve, and effectively talk through a response. Keep in mind, there aren’t always right or wrong answers to these questions, but they can still be tricky.
If an interviewer asks you a wacky question, try not to get knocked off your feet. The point of such questions is to see if you can keep it cool under pressure, so don’t be afraid to answer in a creative way. You want to make the interviewer remember you -and these types of oddball questions offer a great opportunity to do so. Good luck!

Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV)
Posted: May 13, 2013 Filed under: Disabled Veterans, Entrepreneurship Comments Off
The Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) offers cutting edge, experiential training in entrepreneurship and small business management to post-9/11 veterans with disabilities resulting from their service to our country. The EBV is designed to open the door to business ownership for our veterans by 1) developing your skills in the many steps and activities associated with launching and growing a small business, and by 2) helping you leverage programs and services for veterans and people with disabilities in a way that furthers your entrepreneurial dreams.
The EBV program is offered by a network of eight world-class institutions:
- Martin J. Whitman School of Management, Syracuse University
- Anderson School of Management, University of California, Los Angeles
- College of Business, The Florida State University
- Mays Business School, Texas A&M University
- Krannert School of Management, Purdue University
- School of Business, University of Connecticut
- E. J. Ourso College of Business, Louisiana State University
- School of Hotel Administration, Cornell University (Hospitality/Food & Beverage Focus)
The EBV is designed around two central elements: a) focused, practical training in the tools and skills of new venture creation and growth, reflecting issues unique to disability and public benefits programs; and b) the establishment of a support structure for graduates of the program. The practical elements of the program will involve three phases:
- Phase I: Delegates participate in a self-study curriculum, facilitated by an online discussion and assessment module, which will be moderated by entrepreneurship faculty and graduate students from one of the partner EBV Universities. During this phase delegates will work on the development of their own business concepts.
- Phase II: During the nine-day residency at one of the eight EBV Universities, delegates are exposed to the “nuts and bolts” of business ownership through experiential workshops and lessons from world-class entrepreneurship faculty representing nationally ranked programs around the country.
- Phase III: Delegates are provided with ongoing technical assistance from faculty experts at the EBV Universities and EBV partners.
Topics to be addressed include:
- What‘s a good business concept and how can I determine if my idea is a good one?
- Do I really need a business plan and, if so, how can I write a great one?
- What do I need to know about my customer and market, and how can I get answers?
- How much money do I need and how do I get it?
- How do I make sense of the numbers, and which numbers really matter?
- What‘s a business model, and does mine make sense?
- What is guerrilla marketing? Are there ways to do more with marketing while spending much less?
- Which activities should I outsource and what do I need to know about hiring employees?
- Where do I go to get the information I need to organize my new venture?
Application process:
The EBV program is a selective, rigorous and intense educational initiative. The program is offered by a consortium of schools that includes Syracuse University, The Florida State University, the University of California at Los Angeles, Texas A&M University, Purdue University, the University of Connecticut, Louisiana State University and Cornell University. The Cornell University EBV program is specialized and limited to those veteran entrepreneurs interested in Hospitality/Food & Beverage related businesses. Applications for the EBV will be accepted from veterans who:
- Have separated from active duty service after 2001 (or currently in the administrative process of separating)
- Have been identified as having a ‘service-connected disability’ as a result of their military service (including activated National Guard and Reserves) Note: Can be in process of evaluation of disability through VA
- Demonstrate a strong interest in entrepreneurship & small business ownership/management
Beyond the criteria identified above, a complete application is the only remaining requirement to be considered for the program. A complete application package will include the following:
- Completed EBV Application Form (including responses to personal statement #1-6)
- Résumé
- 2 Letters of Recommendation
Selection will be based on the ‘whole-person’ concept, with a particular focus on an assessment of potential to excel both in the program, and also excel upon graduating from the EBV in the area of entrepreneurship and small business management. PLEASE NOTE: The percentage of your disability is not a factor in determining your acceptance into the EBV program.

Wanted: Polar Bear Spotter – Thinking outside the box in a job search
Posted: April 30, 2013 Filed under: Employment Assistance Comments OffSo you may be separating from the military and wondering where your military career fits in the civilian world. Very often your career doesn’t fit neatly into a civilian career field unless they are working for the military or in another government agency.
In those cases, focus on your skills, see how they fit into other career fields, and think outside the box when looking for jobs. We found this job posting on the Associated Press web site.
Wanted: Polar bear spotter on Norwegian islands
OSLO, Norway (AP) — Do you enjoy the outdoors and have strong vocal cords? If so, Norway might have a summer job for you: three weeks in the Arctic wilderness spotting polar bears.
The governor’s office on the remote northern islands of Svalbard is seeking a polar bear spotter to warn researchers doing projects in the region.
The job starts July 8 and also requires previous experience with the outdoors, good polar bear spotting skills and a competence with firearms. But Helge Solli from the governor’s office says the successful candidate likely won’t have to use a gun “just as long as they have a loud voice” to scare off any bears.
There are an estimated 3,000 polar bears in the Svalbard archipelago, which has a human population of about 2,400.
While this job may not be attractive to some, break it down into how your skills fit their required skills. I know as military members we all have competence with firearms. Are you observant? How many times have you had to walk the flight line looking for FOD (Foreign Object Damage)? If you can find can find a rock or bolt on a large cement pad you most likely have the skills to spot a polar bear. Now if you can just sell how much you enjoy the outdoors or have experience in the outdoors, the job could be yours!
Take you military career and break it into your extensive skills you have picked up during your time in service. Make them your strengths and sell yourself to the jobs that are out there. By looking outside the box you may find a career that you desire and actually fit despite your past careers.
