PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Provide maintenance and technical services for Black Hills Energy’s (BHE’s) customer heating and cooling programs as well as Black Hills Corporation’s (BHC’s) internal heating and cooling systems in an apprenticeship role. Provide technical service and support of products and service programs available to the customers and district offices.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:    Program Manager, Customer Operations

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist and follow instructions of the Journeyman Energy Service Technicians for residential and internal customers.
  • Provide technical assistance in the implementation of weatherization programs.
  • Become actively engaged in BHP’s home show events.
  • Be trained and demonstrate the ability to provide heating and cooling maintenance support for the Appliance Service and Repair (ASAP) program. Provide heating and cooling maintenance and installation support for non-ASAP customers as well as for BHC’s facilities and electrical substations.
  • Promote Black Hills Energy’s ASAP program through community events such as the Black Hills Home Builders Home Show, customer referrals, and other programs as directed.
  • Promote Black Hills Energy’s demand controller program. Provide instructional support, repair, or replacement of demand controller equipment and provide accurate equipment recommendations to customize demand controllers to meet individual customer needs.
  • Promote Black Hills Energy’s Energy Efficiency Solutions Program and various other products and services to customers and the community.
  • Conduct energy usage investigation for residential and small commercial customers.
  • Work safely and participate in the development of departmental safety standards.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Partner with trade allies to support and promote Black Hills Energy products and services.
  • Acquire ability to confidently provide technical training for trade allies, residential customers, and Black Hills Energy staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Maintain positive working relationships with Black Hills Energy customers, as well as positive working relationships with Black Hills Energy and BHC employees.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Combination of 2 years of education and/or experience performing installation and service repair of commercial and/or residential heating and cooling systems required.
  • Emphasis on heat pumps, geothermal systems, and electric heating and cooling systems preferred.

EDUCATION:

  • Associate’s degree in refrigeration or related area preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Basic knowledge and understanding of refrigeration systems.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of electrical systems.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of building automation systems preferred.

SKILLS/ABILITY/OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

To provide complete customer service activities relative to sale, installation, repair and service of HVAC equipment in addition to a broad range of gas and electric appliances.  Also maintain Natural Gas Distribution system to provide safe, reliable, energy to both residential and commercial/industrial customers.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:   Operations Supervisor

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT:  Must reside within 20 miles of Granger, IA.

WORK HOURS:

  • Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Subject to after hours on-call status during weekday, weekends, and holidays.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Installs and repairs HVAC equipment plus both gas and electric appliances for residential and commercial customers.  Visually examines appliances for defects, performs diagnostic tests applying mechanical, electrical and gas theory or principles to determine cause of malfunction; repair, adjust or replace components.
  • Promotes customer acceptance of non-regulated company programs such as Service Guard products and services.  Resolves unusual service problems and customer complaints, providing cost estimates and recommendations on complex or uncommon malfunctions of customer owned appliances.
  • Locates gas services and mains for construction projects.  Performs leak detection and cathodic protection activities and installs domestic, commercial and industrial meters and pressure regulating equipment.
  • When required, reads customer meters on a scheduled basis, contacts customers concerning collection of delinquent accounts and performs gas meter turn on and shut off activities in accordance with company policy.
  • Provides requested after hours (on call) services as required.  Responds to all emergency requests, i.e.:  reported gas leaks, suspected carbon monoxide, simulations, outages, etc., in accordance with Company policies and procedures.
  • Installs, removes and replaces gas meters, performs line locates, leak survey repairs, turn-on and turn-off activities according to company policies and reads meters as required.
  • Attend safety meetings and other employee training as assigned.
  • May participate in community relations activities.
  • Performs other duties, which are similar, related or incidental to this position and may work as directed, in other activities that require skills of a higher classification if qualified, as per Article 15 Section 3.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Three to five years appliance repair and/or HVAC installation & service or related experience.
  • Experience/skills in gas and electric appliance repair.

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • HVAC degree desirable.
  • Formal Appliance repair or electric wiring diagram courses helpful.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of principles of natural gas.
